According to a study published in June 2015 by INSEE, the French National Institute of Economic and Statistical Information, the activities at the Port of Nantes - Saint Nazaire generate 24 400 jobs at some 500 different establishments forming one large port and industrial complex. The 7 700 jobs listed in the port and maritime specialisms include the 515 salaried employees at Nantes - Saint Nazaire Port and the people employed by the numerous organizations involved in receiving vessels (vessel piloting, tugging, inshore piloting, etc.) and in processing cargo consignments (handling, warehousing and so on), shipbuilding and ship repair. The port and industrial complex also comprises 16 700 jobs at industrial firms and service companies whose location on site is explained by the presence of port facilities, notably in the aeronautical, automotive, energy and agri-foodstuffs sectors.
A hinterland is a land area supplied by port traffic flows. It varies according to the products and their logistics. Nantes - Saint Nazaire Port's hinterland mainly covers Greater Western France but can extend further afield (motor vehicles, forest products, petroleum products and LNG by gas pipeline, etc.), even as far as neighbouring countries (maritime motorway).
Nantes - Saint Nazaire Port manages 1 055 ha of natural spaces located all along the Loire Estuary, including major sites such as the natural spaces at Bouguenais, Le Carnet, East Donges or Montoir de Bretagne, to the north of the multi-bulk terminal and on the Le Priory site. These sectors form the subject of precise inventories with a view to drawing up management plans suited to each site, while also relying on the intervention of local stakeholders (grazing, hunting, cutting of reeds, etc.).
